Most people think of a sunroom as a natural-light room addition for enlarging their kitchen or enclosing their outside deck or patio area. If you want to add a sunroom or conservatory addition and your property gives you a choice – on which side of the house should it be situated?
Take a look at your house plate and see where North, South, East, and West are in conjunction with your home. Selective siting and shading strategies can save you money on lighting and heating bills. Watch how your trees create shade during the different parts of the day. When you situate your sunroom in an area that uses sun all day long – think of it as free heat and light.
East facing sunrooms
Take advantage of the early morning sun for a kitchen sunroom – light all day – nice in the morning and optimum natural light for cooking.
South facing sunrooms
Take advantage of maximum light and heat in a sunroom facing south. Great place for a garden room, pool enclosure, bathroom sunroom, or hot tub.
West facing sunroom
If you plan on watching television in a west-facing sunroom it may be difficult in the late afternoon as the west sun is at a low angle – but makes a gorgeous sitting and reading room – or just a place to enjoy the view. A westerly sunroom is also a good place for a bedroom sunroom as it’s dark in the mornings.
North facing sunroom
North has the least natural light available – which makes it perfect for artists and artisans – the beautiful quality of light to work from. It’s also the ideal direction to add on to a bedroom or create a home office sunroom with a computer. If your yard is treeless this might be a pleasant spot for any sunroom addition.
